REFORMATION DAY While most Americans this time of year celebrate Halloween, and send their children out dressed as ghouls and witches to collect candy, in parts of Europe this is better known as Reformation Day. It was on October 31, 1517 that Dr. Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This single act is most often pointed to as the very beginning of the Great Reform that would sweep across Europe and, in time, dramatically impact the whole world. Protestant historians have often attributed the many blessings of the modern age to the Reformers and their courage in taking a stand for the Gospel, and the widespread publication of the Bible in the languages of common people. Many Christians are weary of Halloween, and not necessarily convicted by the various Harvest gatherings this time of year. Should churches consider celebrating Reformation Day instead?
