As is typical with many people, this is the time of new resolutions.  Yet many people are hindered by feelings of guilt from the past.  Perhaps you’ve been bogged down by a conscience that haunts or even imprisons you.  This is not how God intends for you to live as your conscience was not created to hold you prisoner, but to guide you and point you to freedom from guilt and bad habits.  It’s designed to tell you the truth so that you’re not held in bondage to lies or to sins from the past.

Returning to Crosstalk to provide biblical insight on this issue was Dr. Erwin Lutzer.  Dr. Lutzer is Pastor Emeritus of The Moody Church where he served as the senior pastor for 36 years.  He’s the speaker on the radio programs Running to Win and Songs in the Night.  He’s also a speaker and an award-winning author on several books.  Some of his titles include: The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent, Life Changing Bible Verses You Should Know, We Will Not Be SilencedNo Reason to Hide and the one discussed on this broadcast called, The Power of a Clear Conscience.

Many people may seem to have it all together on the outside when in fact, inside they’re dying of guilt and a sense of depression.  This is why the power of that which is inside all of us, the power of a clear conscience, is so important.  As Dr. Lutzer put it, “If you have a clear conscience you can sleep at night much better.  If your conscience troubles you, that’s another story.”

Dr. Lutzer defined the conscience as, “…an internal creation of God that gives us a sense of right and wrong.”  He went on to note that every human being has one but it isn’t infallible because it has to do with your training and upbringing.  In other words, the conscience can be conditioned.  This means some may feel guilty about doing something they shouldn’t feel guilty about, while others may have a seared conscience.

  • When your conscience bothers you, how can you know if it’s actually the condemnations of Satan?
  • Why is the idea of being forever forgiven so important to realize?
  • What is the connection between the conscience and suicide?
  • What about deliverance and unconquered sin?
  • How it’s possible to have a clear conscience and experience true joy!

These and other aspects of this topic are covered on this edition of Crosstalk.
