The Severe Problem of Human Trafficking | August 1, 2023
Dr. Richard Schmidt is pastor of Union Grove Baptist Church and also heads Prophecy Focus Ministries. Prior to his current pastoral ministry, he spent 32 years in law enforcement including becoming acting sheriff of Milwaukee County in 2017 until his retirement in 2019.
Pastor Schmidt described human trafficking as, “…a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services or to engage in commercial sex acts.”
Human trafficking is both a domestic and international crisis. It involves runaways, homeless youth, unaccompanied children, people that come in through the immigration system, those looking for help or living in poverty, those involved in drug abuse, migrant laborers and even people with disabilities. Many from the LGBTQI community who don’t feel appreciated or loved are getting sucked into the human trafficking system as well.
Individuals from these groups make up the estimated 28 million people internationally that are currently being trafficked. It’s a 150 billion dollar industry and Pastor Schmidt noted that for the victims, it’s almost impossible to get out.
Review this edition of Crosstalk as it puts a spotlight on this issue by answering the following questions:
- What characteristics does he see in American society that are feeding this?
- With 28 million currently being trafficked, why isn’t law enforcement more effective at dealing with the problem?
- Why is this topic getting little attention from pulpits across America?
- Is this a Romans 1 issue?
- Is human trafficking a sign of biblical, end-times prophecy?
