American Truckers Under Siege: Non-Citizen Drivers Threaten Lives and Livelihoods

American Truckers Under Siege: Non-Citizen Drivers Threaten Lives and Livelihoods

By Brannon Howse, Worldview Report, March 31, 2025

Folks, I’ve been sounding the alarm for over 20 years about the dangers of globalist policies like NAFTA and the North American Highway—warnings I shared with my late friend Phyllis Schlafly on my radio show 15 years ago. We feared non-citizen truck drivers flooding our roads, unable to read signs or speak the language, putting American lives at risk. Well, that nightmare is here, and it’s worse than we imagined. On my latest Worldview Report, I sat down with Shannon Everett of American Truckers United to expose this crisis—and it’s time for President Trump to step in and make American trucking great again.

A Deadly Crisis on Our Roads

I’ve got a deep respect for over-the-road truckers. Back in 2003, my family and I traveled the country in a motor coach for 15 years, holding conferences. I’ll never forget the weight of that rig—loaded with books, DVDs, and stage equipment, it took forever to stop. People in little cars would cut me off, slamming on their brakes, thinking I could stop on a dime. They’d honk because I wasn’t accelerating fast enough. That experience gave me a new appreciation for what truckers endure. But now, they’re facing a new threat: non-citizen drivers who can’t read road signs or speak English, driving 80,000-pound rigs and causing deadly crashes.

Shannon shared a heartbreaking story that sparked the founding of American Truckers United. In June 2024, Scott Miller, a 64-year-old American, was killed in Colorado by a non-citizen driver, Ignacio Cruz Mendoza. Mendoza’s semi rolled, spilling steel pipes onto vehicles, killing Miller and injuring another. This driver had been deported 16 times since 2002, was under deportation orders, and didn’t even have a U.S. driver’s license. He served just nine months for this “misdemeanor,” was released, and ICE finally arrested him for deportation. Nine months for taking a life—outrageous.

Then there’s the Austin, Texas crash. A non-citizen driver from Ethiopia, on a work visa, plowed into traffic, killing five—including an entire family of four with an infant and a child—and injuring 11. Video footage shows him unable to speak English, confronted by another trucker who said, “You were going way too fast… there’s two people dead over there, possibly four.” This driver’s license listed a made-up birthday, a common practice among these unvetted drivers. American Truckers United traced his carrier to an apartment building housing 10 different motor carriers—a clear sign of systemic abuse.

The Replacement of American Truckers

This isn’t just about safety—it’s about survival. Shannon explained there are now two ecosystems in trucking. The legacy American ecosystem—mom-and-pop fleets with 50 to 200 trucks—is being decimated. They can’t compete with a new ecosystem of non-domiciled CDL holders, often from countries where many don’t even drive cars regularly, let alone massive rigs. These drivers work for slave wages—sometimes a tenth of what American truckers earn—suppressing wages and living standards for our drivers.

On my radio show across 74 Christian stations, I played testimony from Harvey Beach, co-founder of American Truckers United, and the phone lines melted. Every caller was a professional driver, confirming the horror stories. One from Minnesota said he goes to truck stops and doesn’t see any Americans—just foreign drivers from places like Somalia. The average American trucker should be making $100,000 a year for their sacrifice—gone 7 to 10 days at a time—but they’re lucky to hit $75,000, and wages are declining as inflation soars. Shannon calls it “labor dumping,” and it’s a critical emergency.

A Broken System Fueled by Globalism

How did we get here? Harvey’s testimony revealed the Biden administration’s 2021 Trucking Action Plan, backed by the American Trucking Association, flooded the industry with hundreds of thousands of unvetted non-citizens. These non-domiciled CDLs can’t even be used to board a plane, yet they’re handed out to drivers who can’t read, speak, or understand English. States are issuing these licenses with no vetting—some don’t even require a full name! At the Mid-America Trucking Show, highway police officers told Shannon they’re seeing “no name given” CDLs, but they’re scared to speak out for fear of losing their jobs.

This ties back to NAFTA and the North American Union I’ve warned about for years. Phyllis Schlafly feared Mexican trucks crossing our border with subpar safety standards. While they’re not bringing their trucks, they’re bringing their drivers—Mexican, Somali, Ethiopian, you name it. A 2009 pilot program with Mexico flopped, but now U.S. companies are subcontracting foreign labor, exploiting loopholes. There’s no way to check these drivers’ records for DUIs, speeding tickets, or accidents. It’s a double standard: American truckers are regulated to death, but these non-citizens get a free pass.

Can We Make American Trucking Great Again?

I showed a video of a gorgeous Kenworth truck with an extended cab—complete with a kitchen, bathroom, and shower. I’ve always thought these rigs could attract retirees or couples to trucking, letting them travel the country in comfort. My wife and I loved that lifestyle in our motor coach—she’d pop dinner in the oven while I drove. But Shannon pointed out these trucks are a niche, too heavy for most freight at 25,000 pounds versus the typical 17,000. Most truckers can’t use them, and with wages tanking, who can afford them? Trucking companies are struggling, and the dream of a wholesome trucking lifestyle for American couples is slipping away.

Shannon’s solution? Crack down on illegal immigration in trucking and incentivize Americans to return to the industry. There’s no driver shortage—just a shortage of people willing to work for slave wages. Raise wages, improve accommodations, and make trucking appealing again. I’m calling it: let’s make American trucking great again. We need hats with that slogan! President Trump needs to hear this. I bet he doesn’t know non-citizens are killing Americans on our roads. Shannon agrees—Trump’s focused on world peace, but our truckers and crash victims deserve a spot on his list.
